The film was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina, and tells the story of a boy named Brian Stevenson who discovers that the monster living under his bed is actually a friendly creature named Maurice. The lead role was played by Fred Savage, who at the time was one of the most popular young actors in the industry thanks to his role in The Wonder Years, which was filming simultaneously. His younger brother Ben Savage also appeared in the film as his on-screen younger brother, Eric, marking Ben's first acting job before he became famous in Boy Meets World. Howie Mandel brought energy and humor to the role of Maurice, Brian's monster friend from the world under the bed. The film's music was composed by David Newman. This was the only feature film ever directed by Richard Greenberg, although he also directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt. The film was released in theaters on August 25, 1989, and was first released on DVD on July 1, 2003.

In Reality

The scene was filmed at a residential house at 1519 Chestnut Street in Wilmington, North Carolina. The 3,486-square-foot house was built in 1914 and is located in a historic district. In the film, it was used as the exterior of the Stevenson family home, and the building itself has hardly changed and still stands today.
