Some time ago I asked if I should tell you about Canvas, the South Korean platform for self-publishing webtoons. Many said yes, tell me. I obey!

So:

WEBTOON CANVAS is a platform for authors where you can publish your webtoons, a kind of "self-publishing" on the largest platform WEBTOON (Naver).

An important nuance for authors from Russia: access to the platform is only possible via VPN, as Naver restricts access to the service in Russia.

How is WEBTOON CANVAS different from WEBTOON ORIGINALS?
When you open the WEBTOON app, you will see that it is divided into two parts.

• ORIGINALS are webtoons created under a contract with the company. Authors get paid but work on a tight schedule with deadlines. Originals are constantly advertised at the top of the window.

• CANVAS is a free platform where authors publish independently. It is located kind of "in the basement." I call it a "sandbox" to myself, a place where authors try their hand and grow. But here they decide for themselves at what pace to work and are not limited by deadlines or any output volumes.

Can you earn money on CANVAS?

Yes! Upon reaching a certain number of views, authors can receive a percentage of advertising revenue. Previously, payouts reached $1000 per month (current data should be checked on the official website). In addition, WEBTOON regularly holds contests for CANVAS authors with large prize pools — for example, the recent Webcomic Legends contest awarded over $1 million, with the grand prize being $150,000.

Why should you try CANVAS?

It gives almost complete (but not absolute) creative freedom, no strict deadlines, and the opportunity to interact directly with the audience.

By the way, WooRie, a Russian author, started her "Cappuccino with Marshmallows" on CANVAS. And now her comics are in every Russian comic shop, not to mention "Read City."
