The film is based on a story by Stephen King and follows a drifter named John Hall who arrives in a small town in Maine and takes a night shift job at a textile mill. The mill is run by a sadistic overseer named Warwick; it is infested with rats, and in the basement and sub-basement lurks something far more dangerous. When the mill's basement needs to be cleaned out, Warwick assembles a group of workers to descend into the depths, where they encounter a giant bat-like creature that feeds on rats and humans.
