▶️ According to rumors, Google is developing a more advanced face unlock technology for both the Pixel 11 lineup and future Chromebook models. This project has the internal codename Project Toscana. According to a person who allegedly tested this technology, it will work without any additional visible sensors on Pixel phones. It is unknown whether it uses an infrared port like the iPhone, but if so, the infrared sensors are hidden under the display (and Apple is rumored to be taking the same approach for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max).

▶️ Overall, it looks the same as on the Pixel 10, but importantly, face unlock works just as well in low light as it does in daylight. Last year, there were rumors that Google would introduce infrared-based face unlock for the Pixel 11 lineup, and it seems that has happened. Interestingly, the company is also developing this technology for Chromebooks, or at least testing it on some devices.

▶️ The source cited in this report claims that Google's new technology works as fast as Apple's Face ID on the iPhone, which is certainly good news. Of course, unlike the iPhone, the Pixel has a fingerprint scanner, but a quality alternative to fingerprint unlock that works regardless of ambient lighting is what's needed.
