📸 A COMIC YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRAW: WHAT ARE PHOTO COMICS?

If you arrange actors or figures, shoot a scene, select a sequence of photos, and add dialogue, you get a photo comic. Its long-form narrative version is often called a photo novel or photo novella. All the rules of comics apply here: script, storyboarding, shot sizes, rhythm, transitions between panels, speech bubbles, and cliffhangers.

🎞 HOW IT ALL STARTED

Italy is considered the birthplace of the mass-market photo novel. On May 8, 1947, Il mio Sogno was published—a 12-page magazine where drawings were replaced by staged photographs. The format quickly spread to France, Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. In France, the magazine Nous Deux was bought by 500,000 people every week in 1997. The genre is still alive: in the summer of 2026, new issues of Roman Photo and special editions of Nous Deux are being released there.

🇮🇹 Italy — the historical school: actors, studios, and magazine serialization.

🇫🇷 France — printed photo novels plus new authorial reinterpretations of the format.

🇲🇽 Mexico and Latin America — once a true mass market: in the 1970s, the industry printed about 4 million copies per week, with individual magazines reaching 700,000.

🇺🇸 USA — photo novels are used in education and outreach projects. The CDC, for example, freely publishes 24-page stories in English and Spanish.

🚀 THE FORMAT HAS ROOM TO GROW

Photo comics deliver the emotion of real faces, allow you to put together a pilot without a team of illustrators, and fit perfectly into vertical scrolling. But "cheaper" doesn't mean "thrown together." You need a script, lighting, consistent details between frames, and space for speech bubbles. Without that, you'll get not a story but an album with strange captions.
