In Valdai National Park, scientific department staff walked two routes and measured snow in pine and spruce forests. Such measurements are taken to understand how much water has accumulated in the snow by the period of maximum snowpack.

The two routes were tied to the most common forest types. Each was 1 kilometer long. Snow depth was measured every 10 meters, snow density was measured every 100 meters.

In the pine forest, the average snow depth was 40.5 centimeters, average density 0.22 grams per cubic centimeter. The water equivalent in the snow layer as of February 17 was 89.1 millimeters.

Then measurements were made in the spruce forest. There, the average snow depth was 42.4 centimeters with the same average density. The water equivalent in the snow layer was 93.28 millimeters.

On both routes, the snow lay evenly. According to these measurements, the snow in the spruce forest turned out to be more saturated with water.
