RGS Film: The Great Northern Route

The Russian Geographical Society has produced a wonderful film about the formation of the Russian state in the North and Eastern Siberia in the 16th century, through the story of Semyon Dezhnev's expedition 🤝

Leonid Kruglov, a documentary filmmaker and member of the RGS, together with his team, covered 10,000 kilometers, following the legendary route of Semyon Dezhnev, the great Russian explorer of Northern and Eastern Siberia.

The filming took four years and took place in seven regions of Russia — from the Arkhangelsk region to Chukotka. The researchers traveled to the Komi Republic by dog sled together with Fyodor Konyukhov's expedition, moved by reindeer to Tobolsk, crossed the Putorana Plateau on a small single-engine plane, reached the "pole of cold" in the village of Oymyakon, experiencing the force of the Yakut frosts. The travelers, like the Cossack explorers, crossed the ice of the Laptev Sea to Chukotka under sail on a sea-type catamaran. The project participants got acquainted with the way of life of the Chukchi — hunting on ice, sealing, and living in yarangas.

Although the film is documentary, it is watched in one breath. I recommend watching it 📺
