Snowstorm in NYC ❄️

New York's most famous YouTuber Casey Neistat made a video about how the city anticipated and endured the biggest storm of the decade.

By our northern standards, this is, of course, an ordinary winter, but for a metropolis on another continent, it's a challenge.

On the night of February 23, 2026, a snowstorm hit New York. Up to 57 cm of snow fell in the city in 24 hours, schools were closed, and roads were blocked.

Some consequences of the storm:
— Over 5,000 flights canceled.
— Major power outages, leaving more than 600,000 people without electricity.
— Wind speeds reached 31 m/s in some places, air temperatures ranged from –3°C to –7°C.
— City services used over 2,300 snowplows, and 700 units of equipment treated roads with anti-icing materials.
— Temporary warming centers were opened in some school buildings during the storm.

What really surprised me:
— the emergency alert system — a loud signal and a system message on the phone. Cool!
— that New York has a snow day once a decade
— that riding a snowboard tied to a car around the city won't get you fined
— that you can throw snowballs at police officers with impunity
— that Casey is my age
