Stamps dedicated to the oil and gas industry are hard to categorize as such, except, of course, for the portrait of Mohammad Javad Tondguyan, who briefly served as Iran's Minister of Oil from late September to early November 1980. Tondguyan was captured by Iraqi forces during a trip to the front on the road to Abadan in Khuzestan province on November 3, 1980, at the initial stage of the war. Along with him, his deputy and another ministry official were captured and reportedly taken to Baghdad. In October 1990, Iraqi officials claimed that the minister had committed suicide in 1982, but ten years after his capture, this position was questioned by the prisoner's relatives. Tondguyan's body was handed over to the Iranian government in 1991. The International Committee of the Red Cross reported that he died from torture after eleven years of imprisonment in Iraqi prisons.
