Australian scientists from the University of Melbourne, RMIT, and the national agency CSIRO have created the world's first working prototype of a quantum battery.

This battery can not only charge but also discharge—a full cycle. Inside, there is a multilayer organic microcavity that "traps" light, and charging is done wirelessly with a laser.

The main feature is the collective effect: all battery elements charge simultaneously, rather than individually.

For now, the prototype stores only a few billion electronvolts of energy and holds it for just a few nanoseconds—too early for real-world applications.
