Is the Niche Taken?
Recently we got a great example that a startup challenging a titan can apparently significantly eat into its market share. And of course we are talking about Google and OpenAI, the latter recently announced its search engine. Anyone who has used ChatGPT knows that asking it a question and getting an answer is faster and more pleasant than reading endless SEO texts.
Why did this happen?
Google has not changed its search engine for a long time, which heavily relies on text length, number of backlinks to the site, etc., instead of content quality metrics and user behavior tracking. That is, it decides which site will be first and which last based on text length, number of links to the site, and introductory words. You cannot give a short and clear answer to a user's query and hope that Google will show your site in the top search results. Therefore, in search results, the top sites are those where, for the query "How to peel potatoes," they write texts with a three-paragraph introduction like "Peeling potatoes is an extremely relevant activity that each of you faces every day..." instead of a short and sensible answer.
What conclusion can be drawn?
- For startups: there are no occupied niches, only a solved or unsolved user problem, and if you solve it better than a competitor, their size does not matter.
- For corporations: no matter how great your product and large your market share, you need to reinvent it, try to create a team that will destroy the core business with a new solution, otherwise a competitor will do it.
