
One solution to combat leakage was John Mayo's proposed technology for manufacturing barrels without using rivets. According to the patent, thin plates were cut from a board or log, which were then glued together in several layers so that the joints of individual directions were arranged crosswise or in different directions. Cement or a similar material was pre-applied to each layer. The resulting material was suitable for producing various goods and structures. In the patent text, John Mayo mentions "houses, boats, ships, tanks, floor coverings, pipes [the cross-section of such a pipe is shown under the inscription Fig.1], gutters, collectors, boxes, crates, barrels [which can be found under the inscription Fig.6], sidewalks, tin cans, buckets, tubs, cans, measures, cheese molds, chests, suitcases, dry docks, canal locks, masts, spars, exterior and interior decoration of residential buildings, shops, workshops, warehouses, fences..." and many other products that can be made from his material.
