▶️ A new report from China claims that the upcoming iPhone Fold will feature a hinge manufactured using 3D printing, which will minimize the crease on the foldable display. This is the first time we've seen specific details about the use of 3D printing for the iPhone Fold's hinge, which is also rumored to be made of liquid metal and two-layer glass.
▶️ This is hardly a breakthrough, as the Oppo Find N6 already pioneered this approach in the second generation of its Titanium Flexion hinge. Oppo achieved a "zero crease" effect by using a laser to measure the depth difference of the hinge at a microscopic level, then using 3D liquid polymer to level the hinge and give it a thinner shape than previous foldable phone hinges.
▶️ We've also previously seen reports that the iPhone Fold will match the Oppo Find N6 in minimizing the display crease, which appears to be one of Apple's top priorities. Apple is no stranger to using components manufactured with 3D printing, as the company already uses 3D-printed titanium cases for its Apple Watch series and the USB-C port in the iPhone Air. The 3D printing process is also more efficient and uses less material than traditional forging production.
