At the center of the story is a strong, just, and highly respected blacksmith (kowal) in the district, who helps people and knows how to keep evil spirits in check.

At the center of the story is a strong, just, and highly respected blacksmith (kowal) in the district, who helps people and knows how to keep evil spirits in check. He is opposed by a greedy and insolent village head (local chief), who leads a dissolute life, robs the inhabitants, and commits arbitrary acts on his territory. The village head is only afraid of the blacksmith and tries to stay away from him.
Because of his greed, the village head gets involved in a dangerous deal with the devil (diabeł, often called Boruta in Polish folklore). Then begins a chain of cunning events where greed, strength of spirit, the ingenuity of a simple worker, and the treachery of the unclean collide.
