The main difference of the current stage is the radical reduction in launch costs and the availability of real prototypes of mining equipment. While the pioneers of the past decade built plans around abstract trillions of dollars, modern companies like AstroForge or Interlune are moving toward specific goals: extracting helium-3 from regolith or delivering platinum group metal samples to Earth. These companies have not only investor presentations and 3D-printed models, but also grants from space agencies, tests on the ISS, and detailed space mission programs, even if some of them fail.
