The tanker Universal unexpectedly turned from its previous course, according to data from the vessel tracking service LSEG, which appeared on Wednesday. Initially, it was heading to the shores of Cuba, but now it is moving away from the Caribbean Sea. On board are about 300,000 barrels of diesel fuel.
In the spring of 2026, the Universal departed from the port of Ust-Luga with a shipment of diesel fuel for Cuba. To avoid possible interception, Russian warships—the corvette Soobrazitelny and the frigate Admiral Grigorovich—accompanied it.
The United States authorities did not issue permission for the tanker to pass. Because of this, the vessel remained virtually stationary in the Sargasso Sea for about a month. Now, apparently, it has finally changed its route without ever entering Cuban waters.
📌NiK reminds: the island has been unable to cope with total blackouts for a long time. The main reason is the complete depletion of fuel reserves: fuel oil and diesel have run out entirely. The 100,000 tons of Russian oil delivered at the end of March were exhausted by the beginning of May. Since Trump declared an energy blockade of Cuba, this has been the only supply of energy resources.
Against the backdrop of the crisis, spontaneous rallies have begun on the island. It is possible that these protests are also part of an attempt to further destabilize the situation in Cuba. The American administration does not hide its desire to achieve a change of leadership in Havana. Trump even demanded the signing of some agreement in exchange for lifting the blockade, and also promised to impose harsh tariffs on any other country that decides to supply oil to Cuba.
