The summer thriller "The Beast Within" has been successfully running in foreign and Russian cinemas, in which a dangerous maniac played by Jai Courtney used not the usual movie stabbing and cutting objects, but brought in... sharks for his dark deeds. The warm reception of Sean Byrne's film was largely due to Courtney's performance, who swapped the image of a positive hero for the grin of a mad ichthyophile and didn't lose out. The eccentric villain, dancing on the ship's deck in his underwear, sipping from a bottle, seems to have brought Courtney back from the purgatory of forgettable films and given hope of entering the club of actors who revived their careers thanks to unconventional roles. In this regard, we decided to recall a few more artists whose works became a new starting point for them in the profession.

Nicolas Cage ("Mandy")

Our selection opens with a film by Panos Cosmatos – it's like a crazy trip where Nicolas Cage plays Red Miller, a lumberjack seeking revenge on a satanic cult for the murder of his beloved.

After a string of forgettable films, Cage in "Mandy" returned to his roots – to crazy but charismatic acting. His Red is not just an avenger, but an obsessed demon balancing between rage and madness. This role became a turning point: critics and audiences again spoke of Cage as a master of transformation. "Mandy" proved – when Cage burns himself to ashes in a role, he creates cinema that is impossible to forget. Add to that the visionary aesthetic with blood-crimson tones and heavy metal music, and – voila! Before us is a cult film and its unique guide, Nicolas Cage.

Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler")

Darren Aronofsky's film tells the story of Randy "The Ram" Robinson – an aging wrestler stubbornly trying to regain his long-lost glory and mend his relationship with his daughter.

A harsh, naturalistic story about the underbelly of sports, loneliness, and the search for redemption. After long years of obscurity and forgettable roles, Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" didn't just act – he lived his character, pouring into him the personal pain and experience of a faded Hollywood star. His poignant performance earned him a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, and rave reviews from critics. This role didn't just revive Rourke's career – it brought him back among serious actors, proving that talent doesn't die even when fame fades. True, Rourke never shone as brightly again, preferring sometimes to box in staged fights and occasionally appear in unremarkable films.

Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight")

Christopher Nolan reimagined the superhero genre, focusing on psychological depth and moral choice. At the center of the plot is the confrontation between Batman (Christian Bale) and the Joker (Heath Ledger), an anarchist who doesn't just commit crimes but tests society's strength.

Heath Ledger completely transformed into the Joker, creating one of the most charismatic and terrifying villains in film history. His performance is a hypnotic mix of chaos, black humor, and unpredictability. This role elevated Ledger to a new level of mastery, showing that he could play not just handsome macho men. Alas, this turned out to be his last completed project, but it was the Joker that forever cemented his name in the pantheon of greatest performers.

Rick Dalton ("Lancer")

Yes, we know that such an actor didn't actually exist. But the biography of the fictional character written by Quentin Tarantino for "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" could have been exemplary for this selection.

Rick, whose career was steadily declining due to his established image of a good guy with a gun in second-rate films, unexpectedly got the role of villain Caleb DeCoto in the western "Lancer" and impressed not only audiences but also his co-stars with his performance. After that, Rick went to Italy and finally rebooted his career there, becoming a big star.

Michael Keaton ("Birdman")

"Birdman" is a black comedy drama directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film tells the story of former Hollywood blockbuster star Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), who once became famous for his role as the superhero Birdman, but now tries to regain respect by staging a serious play on Broadway.

After Tim Burton's "Batman," Michael Keaton didn't exactly disappear from the radar (he acted with enviable regularity), but those films could hardly be called masterpieces. The turning point was his meeting with Alejandro González Iñárritu, who essentially offered Keaton to play himself. The result was "Birdman." A masterfully shot film about vanity, art, and self-discovery, filmed in one take. Knowing firsthand how a superhero mask can change a person and an actor, Michael Keaton rebooted his career, giving the role of Riggan Thomson autobiographical traits. His performance – powerful, ironic, and deep – earned him an Oscar nomination and proved that even after a slump, one can return to the top.
