As part of a special event, Warner Bros. showed the press exclusive materials from the upcoming sci-fi film 'Dune' by Denis Villeneuve. We tell you what we learned new.

The new film adaptation of the cult book by Frank Herbert, directed by Denis Villeneuve, will be released in October this year. Ahead of this event, Warner Bros. shared exclusive materials.

The ensemble cast, consisting entirely of A-list stars, is eagerly proclaiming how fortunate they were to work with one of the best directors of our time. The scale of the production and the monumentality of the sets amazed every member of the crew. The actors admire what an exceptional storyteller Villeneuve is and how well he knows the source material. The director had long dreamed of adapting Frank Herbert's epic, and when he was offered to take on the project, he seized the opportunity with great enthusiasm.

The film's composer is Hans Zimmer, who previously worked with the director on 'Blade Runner 2049'. Villeneuve himself says he was very nervous about asking the German composer to join the project and didn't even hope he would be available.

In turn, Zimmer turned down work on [another project] to fully immerse himself in writing the music for 'Dune'. The composer spent several months searching for a new sound that could convey the full scale and richness of the world of the upcoming film.

According to him, it's surprising that with such a large number of science fiction films, their musical accompaniment is formulaic. They mainly use brass instruments: cellos, trombones, trumpets, French horns. But star systems are incredibly diverse, so why settle on just one thing? Zimmer wanted to depict other civilizations through music, to show something completely new and unusual.

Along with comments from the crew, the press was also shown a couple of ten-minute excerpts from the film. They included the opening scenes with the Atreides family, the setup of the story narrated by Zendaya's character, and the first flight over Arrakis by Paul, Leto, and Gurney. In this excerpt, the characters observed the spice harvest and carried out a rescue mission of the spice platform workers.

What Was Shown in the Trailer?

We were given a closer and more detailed look at the ornithopters—the characters' flying vehicles—and their technical capabilities. The clothing of the desert dwellers can also be examined in detail. These suits allow the body's moisture to be retained, recycled, and reused. Such an outfit enables the wearer to survive in the open desert for up to a week.

Three times during the clip, Duncan Idaho's (Jason Momoa) beard changes length. This suggests that the film will cover an extended period of time, or we will see flashbacks.

Paul's eyes shone with a bright blue at the end of the trailer. In the world of 'Dune', this is called 'the eyes of Ibad'. The eyes of a person who consumes spice gradually turn blue. This feature is common to all permanent residents of the planet Arrakis.

Paul's line 'I feel something awakening inside me' is reminiscent of words from the trailer of another famous space film, isn't it? :)

Plot and Characters

Villeneuve's 'Dune' is based on the first book of Frank Herbert's cycle, and the film's events will cover roughly half of its plot. The action will revolve around the aristocrat Paul Atreides, who must lead a war against a galactic empire by uniting the inhabitants of the desert planet Arrakis.

The lead role is played by peach lover Timothée Chalamet, with Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson portraying his parents. The House of Atreides also includes the swordsman Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), the head of security Thufir Hawat (Stephen Henderson), and the military leader Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin).

Opposing the Atreides is the House of Harkonnen, led by the ruthless Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, whose role went to Stellan Skarsgård. His nephew Glossu Rabban, known as the Beast, is played by Dave Bautista. We will see Zendaya and Javier Bardem in the roles of the Fremen—the inhabitants of the planet Arrakis.

The film's runtime will be 2 hours and 35 minutes. In Russia, the film will be released on October 14, 2021.
