Starting March 1, Russia has introduced a GOST for fresh bananas imported from abroad and then sold in stores. Upon import, batches will be checked for appearance, taste, smell, and also for ripeness, according to RIA Novosti.

According to this GOST, yellow bananas cannot be imported. The fruits must be green or light green so that they ripen already at Russian warehouses and other places where conditions for this exist.

In a bunch, no more than one cut fruit is allowed, but with the remainder of the stalk green. Bananas should have a slight cucumber smell and secrete milky juice when cut. The length of the fruit must be at least 14 centimeters, and a bunch must contain at least three bananas.

The GOST is advisory in nature and serves as a guideline for producers.
