To be honest, even a year ago I didn't understand the difference between all these mentors, advisors, and coaches. It seemed like they were just different names for experts who give guidance, recommendations, and instructions. And psychology is about support and help in difficult, unstable states.

There really is a difference.

Psychologist — about "why it happened and how to deal with it." They help you understand the past, traumas, complex emotions, and internal blocks to restore stability and resilience.

Coach — is about "where and how to move forward." They help you look to the future: understand what you want, what resources you have, what's holding you back, and what steps will help you progress. It's a partnership format where the coach asks questions based on your internal resources, but doesn't give ready-made recipes (like a mentor, advisor, or consultant).

If you look at history, coaching grew out of the sports field. Its founder, Harvard professor and tennis coach Timothy Gallwey, noticed that athletes are often slowed down not by physical limitations, but by internal ones — anxiety, insecurity, doubts. He realized that over-reliance on a mentor also hinders development. His approach was to remove resistance and guide the athlete so that they unlock their own potential. Now this approach works not only in sports.

You could say that a coach helps you get from point A to point B by the most direct route. And a psychologist figures out how you ended up at point A in the first place.

Psychology and coaching can work in parallel and even in tandem to achieve a single goal. Just like a psychologist, a coach does not ignore emotions — because they are part of the resource and self-understanding.
But there are states where a coach's competencies may be insufficient (anxiety disorders, severe emotional stress, depression, etc.) and they will suggest you see a psychologist.

If you feel the energy and readiness to move forward, but it's unclear where to start and how — sometimes it's enough to just look at your situation from a new angle. A coaching session can be that space where you find your own answers.
