Relatable😇
In the morning, you're full of determination to eat only healthy and clean food, but in the evening, the smell of fried potatoes or pizza makes all your good intentions collapse like a house of cards.
Why does this happen?
1️⃣ We have the prefrontal cortex — our 'CEO'. It's responsible for logic and planning. It's the one telling you: "You need to lose weight, learn English, and save money for a mortgage."
It's smart, but its resources are limited. Any stress, lack of sleep, or decision-making quickly exhausts it.
2️⃣ We also have the limbic system — a kind of 'Wild Empress'. It's ancient, powerful, and completely unrestrained. It doesn't care about our bright future, mortgage, or size 44.
It wants gypsies with bears cake, wine, and memes right now. Its resources are endless; it's ready to throw a party at any moment.
What happens in the evening?
When you come home after a tough day, with clients nagging you and hundreds of decisions to make, your CEO is already knocked out.
At dinner, it has to make a bunch of micro-decisions:
— Should I eat this éclair or not?
— What about half? Or maybe order pizza?
— Maybe a glass of wine to relax?
Each choice finishes off the CEO. It's been working all day. In the evening, it quickly says: "I'm tired, I'm out."
The Wild Empress takes over, completely unrestrained.
You come to your senses when you've already finished the pot of borscht.
Shame, guilt, and the feeling that "something is wrong with me" set in.
It seems like everyone else has normal willpower, but yours is like jelly.
But appealing to willpower is a mistake. Willpower is not a character trait; it's essentially a resource of the prefrontal cortex.
And fighting the limbic system is useless — it's stronger.
So what to do in such situations? How not to sweep away everything in your path?
There's a working solution, and it's not about willpower at all.
What do you think it is?
Write your suggestions, and I'll give you a ready-made algorithm in the next post.
