From March 1, budget-funded residency slots for medical students will become targeted. Graduates will need to work up to 3 years in medical organizations of the compulsory health insurance system.
Residency is pursued to become narrow specialists, such as surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, and others. If the terms of the targeted contract are violated, the graduate will have to reimburse the costs for at least one year of study and pay a fine double that amount.
The new rules will affect those who enter residency from 2026. It will no longer be possible to enter residency on a budget under a different scheme, only through a targeted quota with mandatory work. Without residency, one cannot become a narrow specialist; one can work as a general practitioner or family doctor.
