
🧠 Why We 'Don't See' Things Right Under Our Nose
Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem explained why people sometimes fail to notice objects in plain sight—for example, keys on the nightstand or glasses next to the lamp.
🔬 What the experiment showed:
Participants were shown visual objects on a monitor, then the temporal neural dynamics of attention were measured while observing one or several objects simultaneously.
⚡️Key findings:
🔹 Attention works discretely, not continuously—the brain takes 'snapshots' of different areas, quickly switching between them
🔹 When focusing on one object, recognition accuracy oscillates at a frequency of 8 hertz (8 times per second)
🔹 When tracking two objects, the frequency drops to 4 hertz
🔹 With three objects, it decreases to 2.6 hertz
🧩 Why this happens:
When multiple objects demand attention simultaneously, populations of neurons compete in brain areas processing visual signals. The brain does not perform tasks simultaneously but switches between them, unconsciously 'missing' some things from view.
This also explains why multitasking is difficult for humans—the illusion of continuous attention is created by very fast focus switching.
So, 'absent-mindedness' is not a character flaw but a physiological mechanism of our brain's functioning! 🤯
