CEO of Replit (Amjad Masad) shared his opinion in an interview about what is currently happening with the hiring of novice developers.
While everyone is shouting from every corner that juniors are no longer needed and AI will replace everyone, Masad says the opposite: a golden era has arrived for juniors. But there is a nuance. This is an era for completely different juniors.
Key takeaways:
1️⃣ Collapse of roles. Engineers are doing design and sales, designers are shipping code. The boundaries between professions are blurring. Businesses no longer need people who say, "I only write backend, I don't touch frontend." Businesses need those who deliver results.
2️⃣ Programming skill is no longer a bottleneck. Knowing the syntax of a language or memorizing framework methods is no longer a competitive advantage. The bottleneck has become your ambition, creativity, and ability to use tools (neural networks).
3️⃣ Agent-maxing. Masad uses this term to describe a new approach. It's when a developer doesn't sit on one task for a week, digging through documentation, but instead launches a dozen AI agents in parallel, tests a bunch of hypotheses, and assembles a finished product.
Interesting fact: Replit is now trying to hire as many recent students as possible. Why? Because they don't yet have the narrow-mindedness of classic enterprise. They use AI to the max by default because they need to somehow compensate for their lack of experience.
In short, the market for juniors who just want to "write code on tasks" is dead.
But the market for juniors who know how to solve business problems using modern tools is empty, and they pay money there.
