🔥 How Companies Develop Strategy
Strategic planning is no longer about boring five-year plans! The world is shifting to agile and digital methods of strategic planning. Let's take a look at the fresh APQC report (American Productivity and Quality Center), which surveyed 550 companies worldwide. Here are the juiciest insights:
🚀 Speed matters
The main trend is to plan more often. One year is the new standard (41%). One in three (34%) does it every six months or even more often. And only 15% of daredevils plan 2-3 years ahead.
🎯 Many goals = short horizon
Your company set more than 50 goals? Get ready for more than half of them to be short-term. If you have fewer than 25 goals, you can afford to think long-term.
⚔️ Top 4 tools in a strategist's arsenal
SWOT analysis (54%) — old but effective.
Target/problem planning (53%) — to hit the mark precisely.
Scenario planning (41%) — prepare for any turn of events.
BSC (40%) — keep a finger on the pulse of all indicators.
🔄 Top-down or team game?
Almost half (48%) still play by the classics: strategy comes from the top. But 37% have already chosen a two-way approach — the best from management and departments combined into one strategy.
📊 What do we focus on when planning?
Internal: Efficiency (77%), Budget (74%), Satisfied customers (67%).
External: What customers want (74%), Economy (66%), Technology (66%).
💥 Main enemies of strategy
Team disunity (42%) — "every man for himself."
Lack of resources (42%) — want a lot, but no money or people.
Resistance to change (37%) — "but we've always done it this way."
Conflict between urgent and important (31%) — want to do the obvious instead of the important.
