DeepSeek is Building Its Own Cursor, While the US Debates Philosophy 🇨🇳

Continuing from the previous post about why the US risks losing the AI race. That post covered physics, power outlets, and open source. But there is another critical factor — engineering culture.

Nathan Lambert (author of Interconnects AI) recently returned from a tour of top AI labs in China and brought back very interesting insights.

While in American big tech, top researchers fight for author positions on papers, build personal brands, go on podcasts to discuss existential threats of AGI, and engage in corporate wars over ego (rumors about the breakup of the Llama team at Meta due to this have been circulating for a long time) — in China, total pragmatism reigns.

There, development is driven by yesterday's students, unburdened by philosophical baggage and ego. They don't care about abstract alignment debates. Their task is to pragmatically, methodically, and without unnecessary noise build the best models in the world, squeezing the maximum out of available hardware. And, by the way, they consider DeepSeek the absolute technical authority in the domestic market.

And now DeepSeek is forming a team to create a desktop agent — a competitor to Cursor, Copilot, and Claude Code.

They have open positions for a product manager and an engineer, which are very telling.

Their main thesis for the new team is:
Model + Harness = Agent

Harness Engineering — this is what will be paid the most for now. A bare LLM is no longer of much interest. Harness is everything that turns a language model into an autonomous agent. If you want to be a sought-after engineer, you need to stop memorizing sorting algorithms and start deeply understanding:
🔵 Agent Loop and Tool Use.
🔵 Integration via MCP.
🔵 Context Engineering and Memory Management (Memory, Subagents).

But the real meat is in the requirements. DeepSeek requires the engineer to be able to write high-quality code using AI in areas and languages where they have no experience at all.

And from the product manager, they require the ability to vibe-code, and technical background is not mandatory. The product manager must build prototypes themselves in Cursor or Claude.
