🤝 Synergy Through Team Building vs. Competition
I periodically hear from colleagues: "Create competition in the team — and people will start giving their all." Sounds logical, but research says the opposite. Stanford found that employees in a positive environment show 50% higher productivity (remember, our team is a second family). And when competition gets out of control — information hoarding, taking credit for others' work, and burnout begin.
Real synergy is built not "against someone" but "together for something." And here's what actually works:
🎲 Board games at a bar
We gather with the team for board games — it's the best thing you can do to reveal people's true selves. A person at a board game shows their real emotions, decision-making style, attitude toward losing. Natural connections and trust form. At the same time, in an informal setting, work issues that take hours in the office get resolved. Board games are an ideal environment for developing teamwork skills in a "safe" format.
🎮 Online games (Among Us, Dota 2, CS:GO, etc.)
We play Among Us, Goose Goose Duck, Dota 2, CS:GO, Duck Game. Research shows: teams that played together for at least 45 minutes of video games became 20% more productive than those who went through classic team building. Games teach coordination, quick decisions under pressure, and trust — you have to rely on teammates in stressful situations. These skills directly transfer to work projects.
🏀 Joint sports
This is the most powerful tool. We play basketball, go to the gym — and it incredibly boosts motivation. Joint sports create a sense of unity, responsibility for a common result, and teach overcoming difficulties together. Plus a bonus: moderate-intensity physical activity is comparable in effect to psychotherapy in combating depression. So sports with the team are both synergy and mental health.
⚡️ Why not competition?
Internal competition with poor management creates a toxic environment: people hoard resources, fear sharing ideas, lose trust in each other. Collaboration, on the other hand, is a "force multiplier": it accelerates decisions, boosts morale, and generates innovation.
Invest in shared experiences and synergy — board games, video games, sports. This is not a "break from work" but the foundation of a real team.
