Yesterday one of my students asked:
"Will we be opening chakras?"
And I thought it was a great moment to share how I personally view this topic and what the chakra system might actually be useful for - not as a mystical fact, but as a clear map for self-discovery 🤍

In Eastern traditions, chakras are described as "centers" or levels of our experience, not only physical but also emotional, mental, and motivational. They are located along the spine, and each is traditionally associated with specific life themes: sense of safety, emotions, self-esteem, connection with others, self-expression, intuition, and a broader sense of life purpose.

One important thing: chakras are not a scientific fact, they are not anatomical structures that can be seen on an MRI or ultrasound. They are rather a metaphorical model, a way to describe different aspects of our psyche, behavior, and inner experience. Just like psychologists use concepts such as "basic needs," "conscious and unconscious," or "belief system" — these are not about specific neurons, but about how to structure complex life experience.

From this perspective, chakras are not "energy vortexes that need to be opened" for the sake of effects themselves.
They are a way to observe where we have stable patterns, what is important to us in this life, which needs are unmet, which qualities are worth developing.

Here's a simple example:
if a person constantly worries about safety, feels anxiety and "instability," they can work with the root theme. This may manifest in strengthening the body's support, confidence in one's boundaries, stability in daily affairs;
if a person gives a lot but does not receive support, the heart or expression theme may be important for reflection and practice.

That is, chakras are not a magical force, but a logical, metaphorical map that helps to better understand oneself as a holistic system: body, emotions, motivations, desires, ways of interacting with the world. It is a way to look at life holistically, not fragmentarily.

That is why in yoga, chakras are used as a tool for self-observation, not as something mystical: they help to understand where we live in tension, where we tighten, where we give too much, and where, on the contrary, we do not notice our needs.

Yoga affects the body, emotional state, and thinking. When these levels begin to work in harmony, in the symbolic language of yoga this can be called harmonization of chakras.
