▶️ Among the many announcements at MWC 2026, HMD revealed plans to add modern smartphone features to its line of feature phones in the coming months. HMD aims to expand digital access for users worldwide who lack constant internet connectivity, through a range of features and services including a digital wallet, an AI assistant, and video calls. These services are slated to launch during 2026, initially appearing in key markets such as India.

▶️ The HMD digital wallet will enable secure money transfers for receiving, storing, and cashing out funds via local payment systems. The service is expected to launch in India in the first half of this year, followed by wider rollout. HMD ensures device-level security with a PIN and reports that its digital wallet was developed in partnership with fintech company Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs.

▶️ AI is permeating nearly every device form factor, and HMD wants to integrate it into its future feature phones. In partnership with Indian company Sarvam AI, HMD has developed a dedicated AI assistant that allows users to perform certain tasks via voice commands. These include basic functions such as making calls, setting alarms, and turning on the flashlight, as well as chatting with AI to answer simple questions.

▶️ In addition to the AI assistant, HMD is also launching a pilot project for an AI companion for elderly users. The service, developed in collaboration with InTouch, will assist elderly users and is expected to undergo initial testing in Europe before a global rollout.

▶️ HMD is also offering video calling and an enhanced messenger in the new Xpress Chat app. The app enables video conferencing using the front camera, and also supports voice messages, group chats, and photo sharing.
