(and why you might want to too)
As a teacher, I often see students trying to "push" an asana or go deeper into a forward fold, but the body seems to hit an invisible barrier. Often it's not a lack of flexibility, but fascial tension. Our muscles "freeze" in habitual postures: behind the wheel, at the computer, or after a run.
SMR (self-myofascial release) has become that "secret key" for me that opens up the body even before the flow begins. Here is my personal TOP-5 areas that I work on myself and give in class:
1️⃣ Feet — our foundation. After running or a long day on your feet, the plantar fascia tightens. Rolling the feet is not just a massage, it's relaxation of the entire posterior chain (yes, rolling the feet helps you reach the floor in forward folds more easily!)
2️⃣ Spinal erectors. To maintain an upright position, these muscles always hold background tension. Rolling them out means hitting the "reset" button for the entire back.
3️⃣ and 4️⃣ Asymmetry: Sacrum and Shoulder Blades. We are naturally asymmetrical: we drive with one hand, sit cross-legged, turn to the monitor. This creates "knots" of tension around the shoulder blades and pelvic tilt. SMR targets those areas that are hard to reach with regular asanas.
5️⃣ Hamstrings. From prolonged sitting or training, the back of the thigh shortens. Rolling with a foam roller restores tissue elasticity, making your forward folds and lunges much more effective.
Why come to my "Yoga + SMR" class?
We don't just stretch — we "reprogram" the tissues. By combining targeted work on tension points and mindful movement, we:
* relax chronic "tight spots."
* correct imbalances from daily habits.
* deepen your yoga practice gently and quickly.
Your body isn't "stiff" or tight — it just needs help relaxing.
