Roll is not just about massage. How to restore mobility of the thoracic spine? ⚙
Many people use a roll just to lie on it or slowly roll over it. There is some sense in that, but if your goal is to restore mobility to a "stiff" spine, the technique should be different.
Today we'll talk about mobilization through a fulcrum.
What's the secret of the mechanics?
When we create a hard pressure point with the roll on a specific segment (thoracic spine) and add quick, accentuated flexions and extensions in that area, magic happens:
1️⃣Leverage and fixation. The roll fixes the lower vertebra, allowing the upper one to move relative to it. This allows you to "loosen up" exactly the joint that is stuck, rather than just arching in the lower back.
2️⃣Joint gymnastics. Dynamic movement pumps joint fluid and loosens deep ligaments that keep our thoracic spine hunched.
3️⃣ Goodbye, "computer neck." The thoracic spine is the foundation for the neck. Once we restore mobility here, tension in the neck and occiput disappears by itself.
How do we do this in practice?
We don't just roll. We find "that very" hard point, fix our hands behind our head, and start a series of short but full-range extensions. It resembles working on a hinge that we are cleaning from rust.
Result?
* Deep breathing becomes easier (ribs start moving!).
* Shoulders drop down by themselves, opening the chest.
* Posture ceases to be a task; it becomes a natural state.
This is the second pillar of my classes "Yoga with MFR" - we use the roll as a tool for joint mobilization. Anticipating questions: Yes, there is a third pillar - I'll tell you about it later 😉
