And that's exactly what you need.
We've already covered how to use a foam roller for muscle relaxation and stretching, and how to improve joint mobility with it. But what if I told you that the foam roller is also one of the most cunning and effective tools for strengthening your core?
In my "Yoga + Foam Roller" classes, we use the roller as an unstable support. Here's why it works better than regular planks:
1️⃣ It activates "sleeping" muscles. When you place your hands or feet on a cylindrical roller, it tends to roll away. To maintain balance, your brain is forced to engage deep stabilizer muscles (transverse abdominis, multifidus), which are often "asleep" in everyday life.
2️⃣ Improves proprioception. This is your ability to sense your body's position in space. Exercises on an unstable surface "train" the brain-muscle connection. This is the best insurance against everyday injuries and twisted ankles.
3️⃣ Yoga at a new level. Try performing a familiar Chaturanga or a classic standing balance while leaning on the roller. You'll feel every muscle you never knew existed. This makes the practice dense, mindful, and incredibly powerful.
What do we do in class?
* Cat-cow, planks, and push-ups on the roller — for an engaged core and stable shoulders.
* Balances with support on the roller — to improve body coordination.
* Dynamic transitions where the roller constantly "provokes" you to lose balance.
Who needs this?
Those who want not just a "stretched" but a strong and functional body. If you find regular workouts boring and want to see real progress in controlling every movement, this is for you.
Ready to explore your balance?
